About
I’ve lived, worked, and brought my kids up in London since 1976. But, though I know Soho like the back of my hand, my formative years were spent in Coventry, kicking footballs, chasing girls, playing guitar, and listening to Mott the Hoople.
After leaving Hornsey Art College (which had become Middlesex Poly), I worked as a designer, then as an art director, then as a copywriter. And ‘writer’ has remained on my business card pretty much ever since – whether that’s in advertising, music or entertainment.
I’ve covered just about every discipline over the years, from huge national TV campaigns to emails to local shopping centre customers, and delivered successful work in most categories – from transport to technology, FMCG to financial – and most other sectors in between. And I’m pleased to say I’ve won my fair share of awards too, including a BAFTA when I worked with the wonderful Nick Park on the Creature Comforts campaign while at GGK.
Perhaps one of the most satisfying periods of my life was the 4 years I spent as Head of Copy at SCA (The School of Communication Arts) – one of the most successful ad schools in the world. Helping the next generation get stared in the business and on the road to success was easily as rewarding (and probably more so) than producing campaigns myself.
Though delivery mechanisms have changed considerably over the years, I still believe that the idea is king, that many current communications are considerably poorer for blatantly not containing one – and I still believe words are the tools we primarily use to create one.
At least they are the tools that I use. And I’m happy to continue to use those tools to deliver ideas and communications for anyone that asks.
